Darlene McAllister

1985 Great Comebacks® Program Award Recipient

Darlene McAllister
“I was proud to have the chance to show other young mothers that having an intestinal disease or ostomy doesn’t have to stop you from living your life.”

While pregnant with her second child, Darlene McAllister began experiencing symptoms of Crohn’s disease. With determination, however, she persevered over her illness to resume the activities she loved – the most important being an active and hands-on mom to her two daughters.

After undergoing ostomy surgery in 1979, three years after diagnosis, Darlene felt stronger then ever. She took up bowling, horseback riding, swimming and camping. When she received the Great Comebacks® Award in 1986, Darlene was in shock – her husband, Howard, had submitted her story without her knowledge!

“Receiving the Great Comebacks® Award was a huge honor,” said Darlene. “I was proud to have the chance to show other young mothers that having an intestinal disease or ostomy doesn’t have to stop you from living your life.” Four years ago, Darlene undertook a new challenge – starting a small gourds arts and craft business. She grows her own gourds, crafts them into various designs and sells them at local craft shows.

Darlene, 58, lives in Holley, New York, and says her favorite activity by far is spending time with her loving and supportive husband of 39 years, two daughters and new baby granddaughter.
