2003 Great Comebacks® Program Award Recipient

“I’ve learned to take life one day at a time,” said Lisa. “Trusting in God’s faithfulness and with the support of my family, I know everything will turn out alright!”
Lisa Andrews’ life has been a series of comebacks – she has overcome Crohn’s disease, ileostomy surgery, thyroid cancer and, most recently, breast cancer. Lisa has met all of these challenges with grace, optimism and courage that inspire all around her – Lisa is a true fighter.
Lisa’s comeback journey began when she was diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease (presumed to be ulcerative colitis) in 1985. Just a year later, she learned she had thyroid cancer and underwent surgery and radiation. Then in 1996, she underwent ileostomy surgery and discovered she had Crohn’s disease. Thankfully, after surgery, Lisa’s health greatly improved, and she was once again ready to live life full speed ahead.
“I felt so much better,” recalled Lisa. “My ostomy just became second nature.”
With the hope of helping others through their medical struggles, Lisa began visiting patients to share her success story and provide support as they underwent ostomy surgery. She encouraged many ostomates on the phone and via e-mail, and also started a CCFA support group at her local hospital in Fayetteville, GA.
Most recently, after moving to Grass Valley, CA, in 2009, Lisa received devastating news that she had breast cancer. After undergoing surgery and radiation, Lisa is now on medication and considered cancer-free.
Today, Lisa, 48, greatly enjoys serving with her husband, Mark, on staff at the Christian Encounter Ministries, a residential counseling program for youth aged 16-25. Besides spending time with the ministry family, Lisa also enjoys walking, working outdoors, spending time with her daughter Sara, 14, and keeping in touch with her son, Michael, 22, a Marine stationed in North Carolina.
