Travel Tips
- Make sure you have enough equipment. Work out what you’d
normally need for the same period of time if you were
at home – and add at least ten% more. You’ll
be eating differently, so your digestive system won’t
necessarily behave the same way. In case you get Delhi
belly, take some drainable bags if you normally use closed
ones.
- Take your supplies in your hand luggage – luggage
that is checked into the hold has a nasty habit of ending
up where you’re not.
- If youre going to be away for a while, why not send an
emergency pack to yourself at the nearest “poste
restante” address?
- Ask your stoma nurse for a stoma contact near your destination.
A travel certificate (available from the ia,
British Colostomy Association, Urostomy Association and
Amcare) which is signed by your doctor will explain to
inquisitive custom officers in different languages why
you are carrying medical supplies.
- Cut your flanges in advance – you can’t
take scissors in your hand luggage.
- Travel insurance is essential, but make sure that the
cover doesn’t exclude pre-existing conditions.
- Requesting an aisle seat on the plane so you can get
out easily.
- Your bag might balloon a little with wind when youre
flying, so a bag with a filter is advisable, and avoid
fizzy drinks.
- Use a pouch with a fabric-like comfort backing, or cover
your pouch with a cotton cover, available on prescription,
to reduce sweating under the plastic of the bag.
- Enjoy your holiday and don’t be afraid to try
everything you would have done before your stoma.
